DeWalt’s two modular systems look alike in photographs — same yellow and black, same stacking clips — but the cases are a different size and take different inserts. This guide shows you which ToolTrayPro trays fit which case, and how to check yours in under a minute.
The short answer
- TSTAK — the lighter modular range. Our trays fit the DWST82968 organiser case and our bins fit the DWST1-70706 two-drawer unit.
- ToughSystem 2.0 — the heavier range. Our divider sets fit the DWST83407-1 and DWST83408-1 cases.
- Stanley FatMax Pro-Stack — a different brand, but the same tray footprint as TSTAK, so the same trays fit both.
If you remember one thing: the model number matters more than the family name. DeWalt has made several generations of TSTAK and ToughSystem cases, and inserts are cut for a specific case.
Identify your case in 30 seconds
- Find the model number. It is usually moulded into the lid or printed on a sticker inside. TSTAK cases are mostly
DWST1-…; ToughSystem 2.0 cases areDWST83…. - Look at the lid. A clear, see-through organiser lid on a slim case is usually TSTAK. A deep case with an opaque lid, heavy latches and a top handle is ToughSystem.
- Check the clips. ToughSystem uses chunky side latches; TSTAK uses a lighter clip arrangement.
Still unsure? Send us a photo of the case with the label visible and we will confirm before you order — faster than returning the wrong set.
What fits a DeWalt TSTAK case (DWST82968)
This is the case most people mean by “TSTAK organiser”: the slim one with the clear lid and a grid of compartments. Our nesting trays are designed around it:
- Shallow nesting tray with dividers — the everyday fixings tray
- Medium nesting tray with dividers — sockets and small hand tools
- Large nesting tray — bulkier items, or a stack of two smaller trays
- Sliding tray — for bits and drivers you reach for constantly
- Nesting cup lid — keeps small parts in when the case rides on its side

All of these fit Stanley FatMax Pro-Stack cases too, because the internal footprint is the same — see Stanley Pro-Stack inserts.
What fits ToughSystem 2.0 — DWST83407-1
The DWST83407-1 is a deeper case with its own internal dividers. Our sets replace or extend them:

Shallow, medium or large — which tray do you need?
The trays nest: a shallow sits inside a medium, a medium inside a large. That means one case can hold a stack.
- Shallow — screws, washers, fixings, drill bits.
- Medium — sockets on rails, pliers, tape, small spanners.
- Large — deeper tools, or to carry a stack of two smaller trays.
A setup that works well: a large tray in the case, a medium inside it for sockets, a shallow on top for fixings. Lift the shallow out and your fixings are in your hand without unpacking anything.
Three mistakes worth avoiding
- Buying ToughSystem dividers for a TSTAK case. The cases are different depths and the sets are not interchangeable.
- Assuming “TSTAK” means one case. The DWST1-70706 drawer unit is TSTAK too, but it takes bins, not trays — see drawer unit bins.
- Filling trays to the lid. Overfilled trays bow and the dividers stop gripping. Leave a few millimetres so the lid shuts without pressure.
Questions we get most
Will these fit the original ToughSystem, not 2.0?
Our divider sets are cut for ToughSystem 2.0 (DWST83407-1 and DWST83408-1). The first-generation cases have a different internal depth — send the model number and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
Do the trays rattle?
They are printed to the case footprint, so they do not slide side to side. If the case travels on its side, add the nesting cup lid so small parts stay put.
Can I put TSTAK trays in a ToughSystem case?
Not as a drop-in fit. TSTAK trays are shaped for the shallower TSTAK case.
